Use gravel and rock when ever possible to create firelines around your home.    Pay particular
attention to areas underneath decks and porches.  Screen porches with 1/4" mesh wire to help keep
fire brands and things like tumbleweeds, leaves, anything combustible out.  Do not store anything
combustible under your porches and decks such as firewood!   On this particular home we placed a
landscape fabric underneath the porch and spread 3/4" gravel over it.   We also did the same thing
behind the home where the eve of the roof comes so close to the slope of the hill.  This will help
facilitate good runoff and prevent the natural vegetation from growing to close to the roof so that it
cannot be ignited by fire creeping through the grass.
Notice on this project how the porch is completely
sealed underneath to prevent embers and
combustibles from entering.   The use of gravel,
and rock around the wood structure will help
prevent any ground fire from igniting the porch.
Plant fire resistant plants and keep them well
irrigated.
Here we created a nice cut border along the grass, installed landscape fabric,
crushed stone and planted fire resistant plants.   The home also is constructed of
fire resistant materials.  It is easy to maintain, and very fire resistant.
To a fire, your home is nothing but FUEL!
Even if your home is located in a area where you don't have enough water to keep a lush
green lawn, the use of proper construction materials, and fire safe landscaping utilizing
non combustible materials can reduce the chances of your home becoming fuel that can
feed the fire.  Contact FIRELINE for help or any questions, and plan ahead!
